Tell us about your sports & fitness background: I was a very competitive gymnast until the age of 16. I also started diving my freshman year in high school and continued that for all 4 years. Even though I didn’t play a sport in college I still continued to be active and started distance running and have finished two half marathons.
How did you first get exposed to CrossFit? I had sort of heard about CrossFit before, but never really knew much about it. My roommate here in North Carolina started CrossFit in college and kept telling me I should try it. Once I found out Bull City opened and that it was less than a mile away from my apartment I decided it was a sign I should go ahead and give it a try. The first class I went to started off with working on handstands, and being a former gymnast I was pretty excited about getting to do handstand again. After that I remember doing a WOD consisting of deadlifts, sit-ups, box jumps and sprints. I was a little skeptical that this type of workout would keep me in shape but I kept coming back and sure enough joining a CrossFit gym has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made!
What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CrossFit? Since starting CrossFit I have become so much stronger and I believe this is the best shape I have ever been in. I feel so much healthier overall, physically and mentally.
What is your favorite CrossFit/BCCFmoment? My favorite BCCF moment is when Allie and I took 3rd place at our first CrossFit competition! Initially our goal had been to just do our best, but actually placing was so exciting! It felt great to know that the hard work we had been doing in the gym really paid off!
What is your advice for people just getting started or thinking about starting CrossFit? If you have ever thought about CrossFit but haven’t tried it yet, you definitely should! I’ve heard a lot of people say they think they aren’t strong enough for CrossFit, but that’s not true at all! Anyone can do CrossFit, which is also something that I love about it! I’ve watched so many people at the gym do things they never thought were possible (myself included). Whether you are a retired athlete looking to be competitive in something new or someone who just wants to get in shape and make friends while doing it, CrossFit has something to offer everyone!
What are your hobbies, interests, and/or talents outside of CrossFit? Right now I’m working on my Doctor of Physical Therapy degree at Duke University. Aside from CrossFit and school I love spending time with my friends and family and doing active things whenever possible, such as hiking or biking riding! I also really enjoy working with kids and teach gymnastics classes a few days each week.
